Multi-Vehicle Collision in Carson Results in Tragic Loss of Manhattan Beach Motorcycle Officer [Carson, CA]

CARSON, California – Tragedy struck on October 4, 2023 as a dedicated Manhattan Beach Police Department motorcycle officer lost his life in a multi-vehicle accident in Carson on the northbound lanes of the 405 Freeway.

The incident was reported at approximately 5:15 a.m. near Del Amo Boulevard, as confirmed by the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Chad Swanson, a devoted 13-year veteran of the force, succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital, according to an official statement released by the police department. Officer Swanson, aged 35, leaves behind a grieving family, including his wife and three sons.

Following the incident, all northbound lanes in the vicinity were temporarily closed as investigators probed the circumstances surrounding the crash. This closure led to significant traffic congestion extending for miles during the morning rush hour.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the officer, believed to have been either on duty or en route to work, was involved in a collision that also implicated three other vehicles. One of these vehicles, possibly traveling at an excessive speed, executed a lane change, resulting in a collision with another vehicle that subsequently lost control.

The officer’s motorcycle was struck by one of these vehicles, causing him to be thrown from his bike. He was rushed to Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, where he was sadly pronounced deceased.

Another individual suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital. The remaining drivers involved in the incident cooperated fully with law enforcement.

Officer Swanson was among the crowd at the 2017 Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas when a gunman opened fire on concert goers from a nearby hotel. Swanson showed heroic actions in assisting victims during the chaos.

The city released a statement affirming its support for the family and the police department during this trying time. The statement also mentioned that local agencies would step in to ensure the continuation of public safety services.

Later in the morning, police made arrangements to escort Officer Swanson’s body from the hospital to the county Medical Examiner’s Office in downtown Los Angeles.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Officer Swanson during this challenging period.
