KINGS COUNTY, CA — Two people were killed following a devastating truck and motorcycle crash in Kings County on Friday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Details of the Crash
The collision occurred just before 5:00 p.m. near Highway 43 and Lansing Avenue, south of Hanford.
CHP investigators say a truck was traveling southbound on Highway 43 while a motorcycle carrying two riders was traveling northbound.
For reasons that remain under investigation, the truck reportedly crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with the motorcycle.
The motorcycle’s driver, 65-year-old Kenny Conley, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger, 65-year-old Leslie Conley, was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries but later died.
The driver of the truck sustained major injuries and was also transported to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Impact on Family and Community
The loss of Kenny and Leslie Conley has left family members and loved ones mourning an unimaginable tragedy.
Head-on collisions involving motorcycles are among the most severe crashes on California roadways because riders have little protection against the force of impact. When these crashes occur, surviving families are often left with emotional devastation, unexpected expenses, and difficult questions about what happened.
As investigators work to determine why the truck entered the opposing lane of traffic, the Conley family deserves answers and accountability.
Legal Rights After a Fatal Truck and Motorcycle Crash
When a fatal collision involves a commercial or passenger truck crossing into oncoming traffic, surviving family members may have important legal rights under California law.
Wrongful Death Claims
Under California Code of Civil Procedure §377.60, eligible family members may pursue compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship, care, and guidance
- Loss of household services and contributions
Duty to Operate a Vehicle Safely
California law requires all drivers to use reasonable care while operating a vehicle. Under Civil Code §1714, drivers who act negligently and cause injury or death may be held legally responsible for the resulting damages.
Comparative Fault Considerations
California follows a comparative negligence system under Civil Code §1431.2. Investigators may examine whether multiple factors contributed to the collision while determining liability.
Right to a Full Investigation
Families may seek answers through:
- Accident reconstruction analysis
- Vehicle inspections
- Electronic data recorder (black box) information
- Witness interviews
- Toxicology testing
- Roadway and traffic-condition analysis
A thorough investigation can help determine exactly what happened and whether the crash could have been prevented.
