SAN DIEGO, California – A 17-year-old boy suffered serious injuries Saturday evening after an electric motorcycle crash in San Diego, Bay Park, according to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).
The incident occurred around 5:10 p.m. when the teenager, who was not wearing a helmet, was riding an off-road Surron motorcycle northbound in the 2600 block of Fairfield Street. At the same time, a 41-year-old man driving a 2001 Mercedes E320 was traveling southbound in the 2700 block of Fairfield Street.
Details of the Collision
As both vehicles approached the intersection of Fairfield Street and Huxley Street from opposite directions, the Mercedes made a left turn onto eastbound Huxley Street. It was during this maneuver that the electric motorcycle and the car collided.
The impact of the crash ejected the teenager from his motorcycle, causing severe injuries, including a cerebral air embolism—a dangerous condition where gas bubbles obstruct blood flow in the brain—and multiple facial fractures. Emergency responders transported the boy to a local hospital, but his current condition remains unknown.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
The SDPD’s Traffic Division is handling the investigation. Officials have confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, but the fault has yet to be determined. Authorities urge anyone with information about the collision to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
A Reminder of Helmet Safety
This incident underscores the importance of helmet use, especially for young riders operating electric or off-road vehicles. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of severe head injuries in accidents, making them an essential safety measure for all motorcyclists.
Our thoughts are with the injured teenager and his family as they navigate this difficult time. We hope for his swift and complete recovery and urge the community to prioritize safety to prevent such tragedies in the future.
