Motorcyclist Severely Burned in Rear-End Collision

San Diego, California — A 42-year-old man sustained critical burn injuries when his motorcycle rear-ended a vehicle in Ocean Beach, causing the motorcycle to catch fire. His 38-year-old female passenger was ejected and suffered serious injuries, according to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).

The accident occurred at 4:36 p.m. on Tuesday as the motorcyclist rode his 2024 BMW west on the 5100 block of Voltaire Street, stated SDPD Officer John Buttle. The motorcyclist collided with a 2016 Honda CRV, driven by a 49-year-old man, who had stopped at a stop sign on Bacon Street.

Officer Buttle reported that the motorcycle failed to stop, resulting in a rear-end collision. The impact caused the motorcycle to ignite, leaving the driver with severe burn injuries. The passenger ejected from the bike, suffered an open pelvic fracture and a significant scalp laceration.

Authorities noted that DUI might have contributed to the incident. The Honda driver reported back pain following the crash.

SDPD traffic officers responded promptly and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the motorcycle accident.
