Motorcycle Accident on the 91 Freeway Injures LAPD Officer

CORONA, CA —  An LAPD motorcycle officer was injured Tuesday afternoon in a motorcycle accident on the 91 Freeway, prompting traffic disruptions and an active investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Details of the Collision

The crash was reported at approximately 12:13 p.m., east of Green River Road, CHP officials said. A witness told investigators that the motorcycle officer was struck by another vehicle, causing the officer to fall onto the freeway lanes.

After the officer was ejected, the unmanned motorcycle continued traveling, collided with a second vehicle, and ultimately crashed into a right-shoulder wall.

While authorities have not released full details about the officer’s injuries, a witness reported that the officer was seen standing and walking, though visibly injured and holding his right side. LAPD officials coordinated the recovery of the motorcycle using a department tow truck.

It has not yet been confirmed whether the officer was on duty at the time of the collision. CHP continues to investigate the cause of the crash, including whether driver negligence or unsafe driving conditions played a role.

Applicable Law & Rights for Injured Motorcyclists

Under California law, motorcycle officers and civilian riders alike are protected when injured due to another party’s negligence.

Negligence & Duty of Care

All drivers have a legal duty to operate their vehicles safely (Civil Code §1714). If a motorist failed to maintain awareness, follow traffic laws, or drive with reasonable care, they may be held civilly liable for injuries caused.

Comparative Negligence

California follows a comparative fault system (Civil Code §1431.2) , meaning an injured rider may still recover compensation even if multiple parties shared responsibility for the crash.

Compensation for Injured Riders May Include:

  • Medical expenses and ongoing treatment
  • Lost wages and diminished earning capacity
  • Pain, suffering, and physical impairment
  • Long-term rehabilitation or disability-related costs

Right to a Full Investigation

Injury victims have the right to pursue a thorough investigation, which may include:

  • Accident reconstruction analysis
  • Vehicle damage assessments
  • Witness statements
  • Traffic-camera or dashcam footage
