In the Ridgeview/Webster area, a motorcycle incident occurred Friday night, raising concerns for road safety. The San Diego Police Department reported that the collision transpired in the 4500 block of Home Ave. around 10:18 p.m.
A 46-year-old woman in a 2011 Hyundai Tucson was stationary in the bike lane facing east along the south curb. Simultaneously, a 25-year-old man was eastbound on a 2017 Yamaha motorcycle. Without warning, the Hyundai executed a U-turn from the bike lane, crossing directly into the Yamaha’s path. Consequently, the motorcyclist collided with the Hyundai’s driver’s side front fender.
The motorcyclist, after sustaining multiple fractures and an ankle laceration, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, his injuries are deemed non-life threatening. Authorities have clarified that DUI was not involved in the Ridgeview motorcycle accident. The incident is currently under review by SDPD’s Traffic Division.
This accident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with illegal U-Turns and other negligent driving behavior. Drivers should always make sure that it is safe to make a U-turn before doing so, and err on the side of caution when driving near motorcyclists.
