OAKLAND, CA — A motorcyclist was killed on I-80 in Oakland this Sunday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash on eastbound Interstate 80 near Powell Street, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision occurred around 2:30 p.m. and involved a Honda motorcycle, a Toyota Prius, a Tesla Model S, and a Subaru Crosstrek, said CHP Officer A.S. Zeid.

Three lanes of I-80 were closed for over an hour while officers documented the scene and cleared debris. As of Sunday night, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Legal Rights for Families After a Fatal Motorcycle Crash
Under California Code of Civil Procedure §377.60, families who lose a loved one in a motorcycle crash may file a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support or household contributions
- Emotional pain and loss of companionship
If negligence—such as unsafe lane changes, speeding, or distracted driving—played a role, the at-fault driver may be liable under Civil Code §1714 (Duty of Care).
California’s comparative negligence law also allows families to recover damages even when multiple parties share responsibility for the crash.
