VENTURA, CA — A 20-year-old Motorcyclist was killed on Camarillo this Saturday night after losing control of her motorcycle and being struck by multiple vehicles on the northbound 101 Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred just before 7:40 p.m., north of the State Route 126 interchange, CHP reported.
Investigators said the woman was riding a black Yamaha motorcycle when she lost control, crashed, and was ejected onto the roadway. Multiple vehicles were unable to avoid the scene, and both the rider and her motorcycle were struck.
“Immediately after crashing, the motorcycle was run over by a Chevy Silverado driven by a 40-year-old Santa Barbara resident,” CHP said. Moments later, a silver Nissan Sentra collided with the motorcycle debris and also struck the rider.
Emergency responders transported the woman to Ventura County Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries. Her name has not yet been released pending notification of the family.
Part of the northbound 101 Freeway was closed for about an hour while officers cleared the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation.
Authorities ask anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information to contact the CHP Ventura Area Office at 805-662-2640.
Motorcycle Crash Statistics in California
Motorcyclists make up a small percentage of California’s drivers but account for a disproportionate share of fatal crashes each year. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS):
- In 2023, more than 12,000 motorcycle riders were injured and over 583 were killed statewide.
- Nearly 80% of motorcycle crashes result in injury or death, compared to about 30% for passenger vehicles.
- Speeding, loss of control, and unsafe lane changes remain the leading causes of motorcycle fatalities in California.
- Riders aged 20 to 29 face the highest risk of deadly collisions.
These numbers underscore how dangerous California highways—particularly high-speed corridors like the 101 Freeway—can be for riders, even those wearing helmets and following traffic laws.
Legal Rights for Families After Fatal Motorcycle Crashes
Losing a loved one in a crash leaves families with grief, questions, and financial burdens. Under California law, surviving relatives may pursue a wrongful death claim (Code of Civil Procedure §377.60) to seek compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support and household contributions
- Emotional suffering and loss of companionship
If evidence shows negligence—such as distracted or unsafe driving—caused or contributed to the collision, the responsible parties may be liable under Civil Code §1714 (Duty of Care).
California’s comparative negligence rule also means families may recover damages even if multiple factors contributed to the crash.
