Half Moon Bay Mayor’s Son Dies in Highway 1 Motorcycle Crash

San Mateo County, California — Joaquin Dominik Jimenez Alvarado, the 28-year-old son of Half Moon Bay Mayor Joaquin Jimenez, was killed in a motorcycle crash on Highway 1 at Mirada Road on Saturday evening. Authorities confirmed that a pickup truck struck the motorcyclist around 5:45 p.m.

A nearby volunteer firefighter administered medical aid until emergency services arrived, but Jimenez Alvarado succumbed to his injuries at the scene. According to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, the pickup truck driver remained at the site and fully cooperated with the investigation.

Witnesses described the accident, noting that the truck appeared to be making a left turn when the collision occurred. A resident, Alexis Deligne recounted seeing the motorcycle lodged under the truck. “The truck was in the middle of the intersection, likely trying to turn left,” Deligne said.

The intersection at Highway 1 and Mirada Road is known to be hazardous, as highlighted by resident Anna van Ekelenburg, who expressed concerns about the safety of turning left onto the highway. “It’s a very dangerous intersection,” she said.

A memorial with flowers and photos has been set up at the crash site in a show of community support. Mayor Jimenez, recognized for his advocacy for farmworkers, is now facing a personal tragedy. San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus extended her condolences, stating, “Our hearts and thoughts are with Mayor Jimenez and his entire family during this time of unimaginable loss.

Jimenez Alvarado, a Union Stationary Engineer in San Francisco, was fondly remembered for his love of photography and time spent with friends and family. The accident caused a shutdown of the highway for over four hours.
