Fatal Motorcycle Crash Caused by Loose Trailer Tires in Merced

MERCED COUNTY, California — Tragedy struck on Sunday, April 7th, 2024, when a motorcycle rider lost his life due to a harrowing accident involving detached tires from a trailer, as confirmed by authorities.

The fatal motorcycle crash unfolded around 11:53 p.m., prompting a swift response from law enforcement in the vicinity of northbound Interstate 5, just north of Canyon Road, following reports of a collision between a motorcycle and a semi-truck, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Identified as 56-year-old Ramiro Orozco from Los Angeles, the driver was operating a 2015 Volvo semi-truck hauling a box trailer in the second northbound lane of Interstate 5.

Simultaneously, a 36-year-old motorcycle rider hailing from Pinole overtakes the slower-moving truck while heading north in the first lane. Reports from the CHP suggest that as the motorcycle passed, two tires dislodged from the trailer, careening into the motorcycle path.

The impact ejected the rider from the motorcycle, hurling them onto the roadway alongside Interstate 5. Despite wearing a helmet, the rider sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was tragically pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities.

The incident underscores the importance of vigilance and safety measures while navigating the roads, particularly in the context of potential hazards such as detached trailer components. The CHP continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
