Motorcyclist Killed in Motorcycle Accident With Garbage Truck

SELMA, CA — A 30-year-old Selma man has been identified as the motorcyclist killed in a motorcycle accident involving a garbage truck earlier this week, authorities confirmed.

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Evan Reed, 30, of Selma.

Details of the Crash

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the fatal collision occurred around 1:00 p.m. Monday near Temperance and Clemenceau Avenues, in a rural area west of Highway 99 outside Selma.

Investigators said Reed was riding his motorcycle when he attempted to pass a garbage truck that was making a left turn. The motorcycle collided with the truck during the maneuver.

Reed was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Legal Considerations After a Motorcycle Accident With a Commercial Vehicle

Crashes involving motorcycles and large commercial vehicles—such as garbage trucks—often require a detailed investigation due to the complexity of liability.

Under California law:

Duty of Care

All drivers, including commercial truck operators, must operate their vehicles safely and check for traffic before turning or changing lanes according to the Civil Code §1714.

Comparative Fault

California follows a comparative negligence system. Even if a motorcyclist is found partially at fault, surviving family members may still pursue compensation proportionate to the other party’s responsibility.

Wrongful Death

Under Code of Civil Procedure §377.60, Eligible family members may seek compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Loss of financial support
  • Loss of companionship and emotional support

Commercial Vehicle Responsibility

When a garbage truck or other commercial vehicle is involved, investigations may include:

  • Driver training and safety records
  • Company policies and procedures
  • Vehicle maintenance logs
  • Onboard vehicle data or surveillance footage

Determining whether proper signaling, visibility checks, or safe turning procedures were followed can be critical.
