FORTUNA, California – A tragic motorcycle accident occurred last Sunday during a ride organized by United Bikers of Northern California to honor veterans. In this incident, which remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), both the driver and his passenger lost their lives.
The motorcycle accident happened around 12:03 p.m. on the northbound side of Highway 101, south of Main Street in Fortuna. The motorcyclists were participating in a group ride from the veterans’ memorial building in Fortuna to Ocean View Cemetery in Eureka, where a ceremony was planned.
For unknown reasons, the driver of a 2007 Harley-Davidson Road King lost control, causing both himself and his passenger to be ejected from the motorcycle. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene; however, the driver, a 41-year-old Fortuna resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a 46-year-old woman also from Fortuna, was transported to Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka with serious injuries but, unfortunately, later succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities have yet to release the identities of the victims. CHP stated in a press release that it is unclear if any additional factors contributed to the motorcycle accident.
Northbound Highway 101 was closed for approximately two hours to allow for the investigation process. Jeff Emery, a motorcyclist who was ahead of the group, noted that the deceased driver was experienced and that both he and his passenger were wearing helmets. Emery also mentioned that a safety briefing had been held before the ride and that a sign had been placed at the blind entrance to the highway in Fortuna to alert other drivers about the event. He suggested adding flashing lights to the sign to improve visibility.
The United Bikers of Northern California community expressed their condolences on social media, showing support and solidarity with the families affected by this tragic accident.
Taking extra precautions can make a crucial difference in preventing future motorcycle accidents. We extend our deepest sympathy to the rider’s loved ones during this time of grief, and we stand with the United Bikers of Northern California community in their loss.
