LAKE FOREST, CA — An 81-year-old man was left in critical condition after an electric motorcycle accident in Lake Forest, authorities said.
Details of the Incident
The collision occurred shortly before 4:00 p.m. near the intersection of Toledo Way and Ridge Route Drive, close to a local high school.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department:
- The elderly pedestrian was crossing the street when he was struck
- A 14-year-old rode the electric motorcycle.
- Witnesses reported the rider was operating the vehicle recklessly at the time of the crash.
Authorities said the teen fled the scene after the collision, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.
The suspect was later identified and taken into custody. He was booked at Orange County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of:
- Fleeing the scene of an accident resulting in injury
- Reckless driving causing injury
Investigators later clarified that the vehicle involved was not a traditional e-bike, but a Surron electric motorcycle, a high-speed off-road vehicle not legal for street use.
Safety Concerns Around Electric Motorcycles
Authorities emphasized that devices like electric motorcycles can reach significantly higher speeds than standard e-bikes, increasing the risk of severe injury, especially when used on public roads or by underage riders.
The case remains under investigation.
