HALF MOON BAY, CA — A 16-year-old Montara teen has been identified following a fatal e-bike crash on Highway 1 earlier this week, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities confirmed that Cash Justin Krawetz, 16, of Montara, died after colliding with a box truck Monday afternoon.
Details of the E-Bike Crash
The collision occurred around 12:15 p.m. on February 9 near Highway 1 and Terrace Avenue in Half Moon Bay.
Investigators say:
- The teen was traveling at a high rate of speed on the highway shoulder
- He was struck by a box truck.
- The electric motorcycle involved was not street legal and was intended for off-road use.
Emergency crews rendered aid at the scene and transported the teen to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the box truck remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Law enforcement indicated that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been factors. The crash remains under investigation.
Community Impact
Family members described the incident as an “unexpected and tragic accident.” A GoFundMe created to support the family surpassed its $50,000 goal within days.
San Mateo County Sheriff Ken Binder called the crash “a truly tragic incident” and urged parents to understand e-bike regulations and speak with their children about roadway safety.
As e-bike use continues to grow across California, safety concerns involving high-speed electric motorcycles have become increasingly prominent.
Legal Considerations After a Fatal E-Bike Crash
When a collision results in the loss of life, families may have legal rights under California law.
Wrongful Death – Code of Civil Procedure §377.60
Eligible surviving family members may pursue compensation for:
- Funeral and burial expenses
- Loss of financial support
- Loss of companionship and emotional support
Negligence & Duty of Care – Civil Code §1714
All motorists — including commercial truck drivers — have a legal duty to operate their vehicles safely. A full investigation may examine:
- Speed and positioning of both vehicles
- Visibility and roadway conditions
- Vehicle data and physical evidence
- Compliance with traffic laws
Even when preliminary findings suggest certain factors, families are entitled to a thorough and independent review of the evidence.
