San Diego hit-and-run crash leaves motorcyclist injured

SAN DIEGO, CA — A 45-year-old motorcyclist was left with life-threatening injuries after being struck in a hit-and-run crash early Saturday in the Mount Hope community, authorities said.

According to the San Diego Police Department, the collision occurred around 3:00 a.m. in the 3500 block of Market Street. Investigators reported that a speeding Ford Fusion rear-ended the eastbound rider, throwing him from his motorcycle.

The driver fled the scene, leaving the victim behind with a brain bleed and a fractured pelvis. Paramedics rushed the rider to a nearby trauma hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Later, officers located the abandoned Ford Fusion in National City, and the alleged driver was subsequently arrested.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

Legal Rights for Hit-and-Run Victims

California law takes hit-and-run crashes extremely seriously:

  • Vehicle Code §20001 requires drivers involved in an accident causing injury to stop, render aid, and exchange information. Fleeing the scene can result in felony charges.
  • Victims of negligent or criminal drivers may pursue a civil claim for medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and long-term care.
  • Even when the at-fault driver is uninsured or flees, uninsured motorist (UM) coverage can provide compensation through the victim’s own policy.
